Problem
The homeowner added a new washer/dryer combo, and the existing shared circuit with a basement freezer caused trips and dimming lights during spin cycles. The family relied on evening laundry and could not tolerate repeated resets with young kids’ schedules. They also wanted the basement lighting left stable while we worked.
Site conditions
- Semi-finished basement with limited headroom and existing EMT runs
- Panel near capacity with some tandem breakers
- Family needed laundry operational nightly; short shutdown windows
- Proximity to exterior entry meant moisture considerations for receptacles
- Existing receptacles were mounted low on masonry walls with minor efflorescence
Diagnosis
Load review showed the shared branch was overloaded. Panel had room for a properly sized dedicated laundry circuit if tandems were reorganized. Existing receptacle location lacked GFCI protection and was near a utility sink. Voltage measurements during spin cycles confirmed drop that could shorten appliance life if left uncorrected. Because the basement occasionally sees damp conditions, receptacle relocation and proper in-use covers were critical to long-term reliability.
